A huge thanks to
for letting me tag along into the dark forest Macabre Monday. When I was nine years old, I had my first sleepover. My friend came over to stay the night. My mother pulled out the sofa bed, and we stayed up to watch whatever horror movie the local horror host, Sammy Terry was showing that night.
That movie was Son of the Blob. I made it around twenty minutes in before I was so scared that my mom had to turn off the movie, and my friend wanted to head home. From that day forward, I have been scared to death of blob-like monsters.
So scared that I remember times in my life when I would hear a noise outside my house, and my mind would go to Blob, Gelatonous Cube, etc., before I ever thought of an intruder. I once was investigating a supposed haunted house and kept shining my light on the ceiling. When my friend asked what I thought was above us, I quickly said, “Nothing,” before the phrase, “Any kind of mold or gel that will drop on me and eat through my skin!” popped from my mind to my mouth.
I have never finished Son of the Blob. I need to revisit it and know that it is full of that ‘70s horror cheese. I’m sure it is not as scary as my nine-year-old brain made it out to be.
Since then, other movies have kept my fear alive. The biggest one is Creepshow 2: The Raft.
The one that scared me the most and that I think about every time I jump into the water is The Raft. The Creepshow movies are sold as comedy/horror anthologies. Yet, this section has very little to laugh at. Its oil-slick monster makes me shiver every time I think of it, and I just had a nightmare last week that my young sons and I ran into one while kayaking.
The dream was like a Groundhog Day situation. I kept reliving the same situation over and over. Each time, my sons would die, or I would sacrifice myself. I woke at 3 a.m. and sat there for an hour, still trying to work out how we could have all gotten away.
Needless to say, I have some irrational fears connected to this monster.
What about you, Dear Fearlover? What monster scares you the most and why?
This post is part of Macabre Mondays! You should check out some of the other participating writers!
, Jeff Kinnard, John Ward, Cole Noble, The Chronicler,Leigh Parrish, and Carla Pettigrew!
This is a unique take to write about for Macabre Monday! I've actually never seen any horror movies with a blob monster — I think I need to change that.
Very fun! I've seen the first Creepshow many times- a friend had it on laserdisc! It's a real classic.
I just did a little reading on the sequel. It seems that only 3 of the original 5 story ideas ended up in the movie due to budgeting, but one of them ended up in Tales from the Darkside (remember that one?).
