Blavatsky is a good base from which to start talking about the occult. But first I would look at the Fox Sisters case (1948? Uhmm, I'm not sure), because that's when the occult crazes (at least as we understand them) spread to the US, infecting so many writers. I'm no expert, though. :-)
That's good to hear. I have read a little about the Fox Sisters. Mostly in research about Hawthorne's The Blithedale Romance.
I picked up Ghost Hunters by Deborah Blum a while back. I know it touches on the Fox sisters as well. I just need to get into it.
