I carried the corpse into Mom’s kitchen and tossed it on the counter.
“You have these things all over your garden,” I said. “This one rushed my car screaming that today’s letter was ‘R’. I tried to avoid it, but it was crushed under the wheel.
“Oh good,” she said, turning on the oven. “It’s one of the perks of the new neighborhood. We’re just a couple blocks from that street where all the puppets work. They pass through here all the time.”
“Why is that a good thing?”
She picked it up and lifted it into the sink, pulling a knife from the butcher’s block. “They're good as a burger or in a stew.”
My sister walked in. She saw the dead thing in the sink. “Leonard!” she screamed. “Mom! What did you do!” She ran out crying.
“Oh,” Mom said. “I guess this was the one that Shelly was dating.”
She paused for a moment and then raised the knife. “Well, R is for Roast”
Here’s another one that came from working with the Chatt State Creative Writing Club. This one was from a few years ago. There are so many great things about sitting down with a group of writers and sharing a prompt. I wish I could remember what this one was.
Of course, it is heavily influenced by an old skit called “Eating Muppets” from the hilarious comedy show The State. If you have not watched that show or the skit, you need to check it out.
