Waking to the shiff - shiff - shiff The foam and spray crashing against the tall rocks The savage vastness of Oregon’s end. Stepping into almost white, My heart pumps To match the sound. Thump Rump Shiff It is everything Internal awash Salted skin Heartbeat failing and falling to touch the break and rise again.
I was traveling with a rock band in my early 20s. We had left somewhere in Idaho late one night, heading for the coast of Oregon. Someone at the show had told us about a little park where you drive basically onto the most savage beach they had ever seen.
We drove our makeshift RV late into the night and found the entrance well into the early morning hours. I remember waking in the full morning to the sounds of waves. I looked out the window, and the vast ocean was walking distance away. The huge waves were crashing into the shore.
I grew up in southern Illinois. This was really the second or third time I had seen the ocean and I had never seen it like this. I was awe struck.
